“免费教人就是结仇的开始。永远不要好为人师,你以为你在帮他,他以为你在俯视他。”作家刘震云的这段话,似乎在教育我。
In my personal opinion, sharing knowledge doesn’t mean you lose it — it can actually benefit others. Why not pass on the valuable lessons I’ve gained through years of setbacks and accumulate some good karma? Since I started teaching golf students, I’ve never charged a single cent. I’ve always believed that as a golfer, we should think from the perspective of helping others. Although I’ve been in the golf industry since 1992, I’ve never wanted to make golf my profession — even after obtaining my official Canadian golf teaching certification in 2022. To be a bit selfish, I think the golf industry is quite narrow, and being a full-time golf coach has never been my goal. Instead, I use my teaching qualifications as a way to make friends. I always approach golf lessons with the mindset of treating students like good friends. After hearing Liu Zhenyun’s words, I couldn’t help but reflect again. In fact, I’ve already significantly reduced offering unsolicited advice — past experiences have forced me to rethink my approach. The Master Tommy from CGTF told me during a teaching session: “We only teach students who are willing to learn. If the student questions you, let them shut up.” There are indeed many seemingly contradictory sayings in Chinese culture. For example: “男子汉大丈夫,宁可站着死,也不跪着生” vs “男子汉大丈夫,能屈能伸。”
In the end, it all depends on perspective — one man’s meat is another man’s poison. Everything has its own destiny. Just go with the flow.
